Web Summit

Web Summit 2018 Lisbon – CamiSiri Survival Guide

It will be my third year at the Web Summit, the best technology conference on the planet, that is taking place in Lisbon, the city that everybody’s talking about.

Web Summit started as a simple idea in 2010: Let’s connect the technology community with all industries, both old and new. In seven short years, Web Summit has grown from 400 attendees to over 60,000 attendees from more than 150 countries. This year there are estimated to be over 70,000 attendees and 1,200 speakers from over 170 countries.

Since 2016 the conference takes place in Lisbon where the weather is great, the food is amazing and Lisboners are extremely friendly. This is why I fell in love with this city and I lived there during my Erasmus program.

Whether you attended last year, or this is your first time in Lisbon, the CamiSiri survival guide has something for everyone. I would like you to get the most of your visit, so I’ve included basic information about the conference and the city, transportation and accommodation, what to do, what to eat and drink and last but not least, events and after parties. I will start really from the basics, so if you get bored, just scroll down a bit.

Web Summit 2018

Let’s suppose that you don’t know anything about the Web Summit… As I said before is a huge technology conference where there will be more than 70000 attendees and speakers like Margrethe Vestager, Young Sohn, Tim Berners-Lee, Brad Smith and more.

Web Summit 2018 will take place at FIL and Altice Arena (formerly known as MEO Arena), from the 5th to the 7th of November and at the moment is sold out.

You can still buy a ticket (hurry up!), just click here and choose the right ticket for you and your company or startup.

Welcome to Lisbon

A roller-coaster city of seven hills, crowned by a Moorish castle and washed in an artist’s pure light, Lisbon is cinematically beautiful and historically compelling. This is a capital city of big skies and bigger vistas; of rumbling trams and Willy Wonka—like elevators; of melancholic fado song and live-to-party nightlife. Edge, charisma and post-card good looks — Lisbon has the lot.

Lisbon is often flaunted as one of the world’s most warm and charming cities! Before you head off, here are some quick facts you should know:

  • Lisbon is the oldest city in Western Europe, predating London, Paris and even Rome.
  • Much like Rome, Lisbon was built on uneven terrain and is known as the city of the 7 hills.
  • The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the longest in Europe, measuring 17 km from end to end.
  • Lisbon has one of the mildest climates in Europe. The city is sunny throughout the year, with an annual average of 3000 hours of sunshine.
  • Pastéis de Nata are internationally acclaimed and delicious Lisbon delicacies! More than 7 million are baked each year, and you can’t really afford not to taste one.

This is Lisbon and Web Summit 2018 is also the opportunity to visit this amazing city. I suggest you do not miss the Top 10 things to do and see and if you have time you can also discover nice places close to Lisbon.

What I love to do in Lisbon

How to get there

I hope you’ve already bought your flight and if it’s not, I know that you can able to use Skyscanner perfectly! Concerning the accommodation, try on Booking.com (with my link you can have the 10% discount), or check on Airbnb (with my link you can have a 25€ discount) a nice room or a house.

To get to the FIL and the Altice Arena, you can take the subway, take the Linha Vermelha (red line), to Oriente Station (Estação Oriente) and walk until Pavilhão 4. You can buy (also online by clicking here) a Web Summit Metro Pass for 1 day (9,50€), 3 days (18,50€) or 5 days (25€) and you can ride on the metro, bus and even trains.

I also suggest taking Uber (use my code f7eyc t get 5€ discount) or Taxify (like Uber but Estonian made) and using my code AYFGR you can get an 11€ discount and then Cabify (the Spanish one) but without discount. They are better than a traditional taxi, cheap and cashless.

Check also this useful venue map.

Summit tips

Make sure to download the app because you will need it when registering at the venue or at the airport. If you need help for registering, check this article. On the app, you can find the full list of attendees and start networking with them right now and also you’ll need that app to schedule your day and not miss essential talks.

Be prepared for long queues at the entrance, at the restroom and obviously for lunch. So be smart and try to wake up early and plan ahead to do not miss time. Remember that the pavilions are massive and there are thousands of people.

Schedule your days: talks, startup, companies, events, people to meet, otherwise you will lose time, so again plan ahead. As I’ve already said, download the app, check the schedule here, bring all your business cards, do your homework otherwise you will lose time to organise there.

Make sure you have at least one backup portable charger or a battery. And for those travelling from outside of Europe, don’t forget your adaptor! Even if there will be some chargers at the event, remember the other 70.000 people having the same issue.

There will be WiFi at the venue but it will be shared with thousands of other people, so don’t have big expectations (anyway last year worked well). Europeans now are roaming free but for non-Europeans people, I suggest arranging a cost-effective data bundle with your network provider or buy a local sim card like MEO.

Are you coming alone? Do not worry, you will meet lots of people to eat or drink with. There are Slack and Facebook communities and obviously, there’s the Night Summit and at the other side events where you will not feel alone. Are you Italian? If you are going to attend the Web Summit and want to get the most out of your Italian community, join our Slack channel by clicking here.

Events

The Web Summit is amazing and I’ve already said thousands of times, but one thing that I still haven’t written is that the side events and after parties are even better! Except for the Night Summit, there are lots of alternatives!

Night Summit completes the package and attendees get discounted drinks at Night Summit venues, so ensure you bring your badge and wristband to receive your discounts. Don’t forget your ID, and bear in mind that most bars only accept cash and not credit or debit cards.

Down here you can find a day by day list that will be updated and refilled as the events (official and unofficial) gets closer. Soon you will find a downloadable version, to save it on your smartphone, print it (better to do not). Where you see the star ★, probably you can meet me there.
